New York's judges earn the second-lowest salaries in the 50 states. Most could make several times as much in private practice, so sweeping raises have been ordered, retroactive to 2001. What's wrong with that? The order came from state-supreme-court judge Edward Lehner, in response to a suit filed by several other trial-court judges, so Lehner himself will benefit.
