Poor sales at Payless ShoeSource likely played a part in the departure of Maxine Clark, according to industry analysts and retailers.

Clark held the No. 2 slot at Payless, the nation's largest chain of self-service shoe stores.

"Maxine was charged with trying to turn that business around, and it just didn't turn around," said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Philip Abbenhaus.

"The footwear industry has been pretty poor for the past two years and especially in the last six months. It was probably a case of May wanting to go in another direction and maybe Maxine wanting to go in another direction," Abbenhaus said.

Clark, 46, was a May Department Stores Co, veteran. She was replaced by Richard A. Jolosky, who is returning to May …
