Judicial authorities in Estonia have brought a charge of genocide against 88-year-old Arnold Meri. As a functionary of the Soviet-puppet government of Estonia in 1949, Meri participated in the postwar mass deportation of Estonian citizens to Siberia. An ardent Communist--he had been awarded the Order of Lenin the previous year--Meri later rose to be a deputy minister of education in the puppet regime.
