Alberto Gonzales is leaving the Justice Department after months of being a Democratic punching bag. Many of the hits he took were undeserved. There is no evidence that the "U.S. attorneys scandal" deserves that label. The administration, including Gonzales, mishandled the firing and replacement of some prosecutors, but was within its rights to handle personnel matters however it chose. The notion that Gonzales committed perjury in his testimony before Congress, meanwhile, is a smear. Gonzales was testifying about the National Security Administration's monitoring of communications by suspected terrorists.
