Although Travis Kavulla's description of Africa's Pentecostal awakening, and of the church history that preceded it, is highly informative, I found its tone to be negative ("Troubled in Spirit," March 10).
Mr. Kavulla notes that "the faith has been Africanized," but that is nothing unusual, as every culture that receives Christianity leaves distinctive marks upon it. He also plays up the resilience of witchcraft beliefs, showing little deference to the fact that Africans have centuries of such beliefs to overcome--they need a correspondingly powerful and personal Christian God to do so.
