'ICONIC" seems to be the season's word of choice for the paintings of Edward Hopper (1882-1967).
The press material for the Hopper retrospective that just opened at Washington's National Gallery (having been on view all summer at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston) pushes the word into service early and often about such familiar works as Automat (1927), Chop Suey (1929), Early Sunday Morning (1930), and above all Nighthawks (1942). "Iconic" is an impressive-sounding epithet. What do you suppose it means? Something positive, no doubt about that. Only famous images get to be called "iconic." But it is worth pausing over the word.
