TELEVISION has its moments, and one of them was a few days ago when an unsuspecting Doris Lessing returned home from the shops to find the press assembled in front of her house, and hear that she had just won the Nobel Prize. "Oh Christ!" was her immediate reaction. She went on to grouch that she had won "all the prizes in Europe, every bloody one"--which is pretty much true, as she is 88, author of over 40 books, and still writing. Like her words, her face expressed neither gratitude nor pleasure at the award. She stomped off indoors in what seemed a sour mood.
