Some of the biggest banks doing business in Florida may not be as good at making loans to small businesses as they say they are.

For some time now, AmSouth, Barnett, First Union, NationsBank, SouthTrust and SunTrust have all been beating their chests about how they have stepped up their small business lending activities. Each has certainly expressed a commitment to the small business market, and small business lending is definitely up at several of these banks. But the numbers at some of the others are actually down.

Overall, small business loans made by the largest banks in Florida (excluding Barnett) actually fell 1.3 percent, from $6.37 billion to $6.29 billion, …
