Wisconsin Natural Gas Co. will officially disappear Jan. 1 as the business is merged into Wisconsin Electric Power Co.

The consolidation of the two Wisconsin Energy Corp. units, announced in January 1994, is intended to reduce operating expenses and make it easier to market services like energy planning.

All but about 30,000 of the natural gas unit's 352,500 customers are also Wisconsin Electric customers. Milwaukee-based Wisconsin Electric, the state's largest electric utility, has about 950,000 customers in parts of eastern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
