In "Inside Story" (May 19), John Derbyshire asks whether the science of consciousness could undermine the notion of free will. Scientifically speaking, perhaps it could. But suppose science did prove that our every choice is the product of causally determined electro-chemical signals in our brains. It would not follow that we would cease to feel free. Nor could we stop acting and choosing (or, if you wish, "acting" and "choosing") and simply wait to see what our next determined step would be.
