Safety concerns lead to several changes, not to mention requiring oil "diapers'' at Indy. In a parallel development, the use of the HANS device spreads rapidly throughout racing.
Arie Luyendyk wins the twice-rain-delayed Indy 500 on a Tuesday. Tony Stewart wins the IRL series title.
