This book does a good job of explaining how quality function deployment (QFD) can provide a procedure by which the customer and the manufacturer can be brought together early in the life of a product. The book is based on the author's practical experiences, and complements other published QFD materials very well.
The author explains how companies using QFD usually perform a market survey in which the views of probable customers provide a useful basis on which to make preliminary decisions about possible characteristics of design and manufacture. Using this approach, the procedure is more formalized in the sense that the customer actually joins with the producer in the design phase of the project.
This book provides the mechanism by which the customer's requirements and the capabilities of the producer are brought into balance through a quantitative process in which the necessary trade-offs are made.
