Unlike Red Bull, the Aptera (Greek for "wingless flight'') doesn't offer you wings. But the promise of 300 mpg from a sub-$30,000 vehicle is creating quite a buzz among energy- conscious California commuters.
So far, 1100 of them have placed orders backed by $500 deposits for the aero-slick, composite-bodied, three-wheeled commuter vehicle the Carlsbad-based company plans to start producing in December.
Classified as a motorcycle, which allows driver-only access to the commuter lane, the Aptera looks more like a Cessna, with its large oval-shaped windows, tall stance and front wheels ensconced in fairings.
