COMMON USAGE: Modafinil is used to improve wakefulness in patients with excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy. Modafinil is under review for treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents and adults, but is not presently approved for this use. The safety and efficacy of modafinil is not proven in children under the age of 16.
COMMON SIDE EFFECTS: The most common side effects associated with modafinil include headache, nausea, chills, dry mouth, nervousness, anxiety and insomnia. Other side effects may include diarrhea, loss of appetite, and sore throat. If you are planning to become pregnant, are pregnant or are a nursing mother, the potential benefits of this drug must be weighed against the possible hazards. Discuss these issues in advance with all of your health care providers.
