Over the past 37 years, the number of calories that adults get through beverages has nearly doubled, according to a study published in the November 2007 issue of Obesity Research. And it's not just sugary sodas that are adding to the obesity crisis--it's also fruit drinks, alcohol, and other high-calorie beverages.
"I always remind clients that the calories you drink are more likely to show up on the scale than the calories you chew," says Sari Greaves, RD, a dietitian at New York Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell's Cardiac Health Center. "That's because beverage calories do not register the same sense of fullness as food calories."
