Last October, 90-year-old war hero and racing legend John Fitch suspected that the heating-oil tanks buried under the lawn of his old farmhouse in Lime Rock, Connecticut, might be leaking. Eager to do the right thing, he told the state's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and was instructed to get every well within 500 feet tested, at his own expense. The water passed inspection, but Fitch was ordered to remove the tanks and excavate the contaminated soil.
The tanks, unbeknownst to Fitch, had been leaking for decades. So far, more than 3000 tons of dirt have been dug up, and the end is nowhere in sight. According to Fitch, the DEP says it is up to him to work with a consultant to select the best solutions.
