KANAAN PENALIZED
IndyCar Series officials penalized Andretti Green Racing's Tony Kanaan 30 minutes of practice time at St. Petersburg for failing to adhere to race control's orders at the end of the Homestead race. Series competition boss Brian Barnhart wanted the Brazilian, who was leading with a damaged car, to pull off the track before the restart with three laps to go. Kanaan did not and denies being told to relinquish the position. He settled for eighth place. The loss of practice time had little effect; Kanaan secured the St. Pete pole before finishing the race in third.
ST. PETE EXTENDED
Andretti Green Promotions signed a deal to continue staging street-course races in St. Petersburg for four years after the current contract expires next year, all but ensuring that the event will be on the Indy Racing League's 2009 schedule. The American Le Mans Series, part of the double-header St. Pete weekend, also expects to return.
ALLMENDINGER'S COMEBACK
Team Red Bull expects driver A.J. Allmendinger to return to its No. 84 Toyota for Talladega's Sprint Cup race on April 20. The team benched Allmendinger after he failed to qualify in Daytona Beach and Fontana and hired veteran NASCAR driver Mike Skinner to help the car make races. Allmendinger stayed with the team all along, working with Skinner. He recently tested at non-Cup tracks in Florida and Tennessee.
