The California Air Resources Board still will require automakers to offer zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs) starting in 2012 but not as many as originally required when the board first mandated ZEVs 18 years ago.
The board said that between 2012 and 2014, major automakers-the top seven sellers in California-must produce a total of either 7500 ZEVs for sale in the state or 12,500 battery-electric vehicles (including fuel-cell-electric vehicles). The original mandate required that 10 percent of cars sold in the state be ZEVs, with increasing percentages following that. That mandate was revised several times and then successfully challenged in court by the automakers.
