Yahoo plays with semantic web ideas

Laura Smith

The semantic web moved further into the mainstream last month with Yahoo's announcement that it is to adopt some of its technologies.

The internet company said it would start to include some semantic web identifiers when indexing the web for Yahoo searches.

At present most search engines work by matching search keywords and phrases, returning a list of links without an understanding of what the information contained in them actually means.

By organising and tagging information using semantic web standards, semantic web technology helps capture the meaning of the information on a page.
