The usual line about "Afghan Star"--the TV hit where competitors croon traditional tunes--is that the show represents a cultural breakthrough in the country's strict Muslim society. It's not a hard argument to make: 11 million people tune in to the program, now in its fourth season on Tolo TV. More radically, a Pashtun woman named Lima Sahar recently made it into the top three finalist spots--a feat that would have been impossible seven years ago, when the Taliban banned music and tightly regulated women's actions.
