NORMAN MAILER died in New York City in November 2007, about two and a half years after the death of Saul Bellow in Boston in April 2005. They were probably the two most prominent American novelists since World War II. At first sight, and at the beginnings of their careers especially, the two men had much in common. They represented the cultural "coming of age" of Jews in America and marked the succession of literary power from the Southern literary renaissance to the Jewish novel and sensibility.
