In January, Ratan Tata unveiled the Nano, his company's microcar, and what got the most attention, understandably, was its price: one lakh, or about $2,500. People all over the world got excited about it. Among those not excited was a gent I know from India. When I asked him about the car, he said he'd never get into one, much less buy it, mainly for safety reasons. I asked him about the claim that it meets Indian safety standards. He replied by describing India's cultural concepts of the value of human life, which, he said, were nothing like those in the United States.
One man's opinion, and I took it as such. But it started me wondering. How much car could I get for between $2,500 and $3,000 in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I live? The easiest way to find out was to use the now ubiquitous trading forum of craigslist.com.
