A competitive streak and the ability to grab audience share are vital in a programming role at ITV.
1997...
ITV had originally been designed as a federation of regional companies with the schedule commissioned via committee. But with greater need to deliver a competitive audience share, a Network Centre is created. Its first director of programming is David Liddiment.
2002...
As ITV's consolidation process reaches its endgame (at this stage, the network is owned by two companies: Carlton and Granada), it becomes a thankless task. With political infighting rife and pressure to deliver growing, despite budget cutbacks, Liddiment decides to move on. He is succeeded by a relative unknown - Nigel Pickard, a former boss of ITV children's output, who had defected to the BBC in 2000.
2005...
After the merger of Carlton and Granada in 2004, the infighting continues under the chief executive, Charles Allen. In September 2005, Mick Desmond, the head of ITV Broadcasting, is eased out and programming duties are given to Simon Shaps (pictured).
