Two-time drag-racing champion Larry Dixon moved into a tie for second place on the all-time Top Fuel wins list by recording his 42nd career NHRA title, at Firebird International Raceway near Phoenix. Returning to the site of his first win 13 years ago, Dixon used his best quarter-mile pass of the day against final-round foe Dave Grubnic, winning in 4.532 seconds at 327.19 mph to Grubnic's 5.002 seconds at 259.26 mph.

"I need 10 more wins to catch Joe,'' Dixon said, referring to retired legend Joe Amato, who holds the all-time Top Fuel mark with 52 wins.

In Funny Car, "Fast'' Jack Beckman took advantage of points leader Robert Hight's loss of traction to streak away for his fourth win in 40 professional starts. Beckman's Hemi-powered Dodge Charger R/T covered the strip in 4.868 seconds at 320.20 mph, well ahead of Hight's Boss Mustang, which went 8.030 seconds at 105.28 mph.

Vieri Gaines, a 60-year-old veteran, scored his third Pro Stock win and his first in seven years by dominating the past three champions in the factory hot-rod class. After an easy opening-round win over Greg Stanfield, Gaines took out three-time champions Greg Anderson (2003, '04, '05) and Jeg Coughlin Jr. (2000, '02, '07) before crushing 2006 champ Jason Line in the final with 6.702 seconds at 205.28 mph in his Dodge Stratus.

AUSTRALIA UNDER THREAT

Australian Grand Prix Corp. chairman Ron Walker said the nation could lose its annual Formula One race, an event it has hosted for 23 years. F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone's demands for the race to run under lights at night at the Albert Park venue in Melbourne could be the final straw for the Victoria government, which funds the event.

The state administration lost $32 million on the 2007 race and fears a loss of more than $37 million this year. Walker and state premier John Brumby want a new F1 deal after the end of their contract, which expires in 2010, but say they will not bow to pressure to put on the race under lights, which they say will cost taxpayers an additional $55 million.
