Byline: MARK VAUGHN
They were the biggest thing in racing in the early '70s: Don "The Snake'' Prudhomme in his Barracuda and Tom "Mongoose'' McEwen in the Duster. If you're reading this, chances are pretty good you had or maybe still have a set of the Snake and Mongoose Hot Wheels cars that made the pair's Funny Car rivalry famous.
On the night of Feb. 7 at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona, California, it was 1971 all over again. Prudhomme, McEwen and a roomful of drag-racing legends gathered to abuse one another once again, to the delight of the capacity audience in the museum's west hall.
"Snake calls me three times a week to tell me how bitchin' he is,'' said McEwen.
And bitchin' includes Prudhomme's private jet.
"I have to take the Greyhound bus straight from here up to Bakersfield,'' said McEwen. That's where both of them will be grand marshals of the March Meet, March 7-9 at Famoso Raceway. "His Lear jet takes 17 minutes; I gotta be there early to get his room ready.''
"He's always on me about that jet,'' said Prudhomme. "I used to paint cars [for a living]; I don't feel bad about having that thing.''
