Lost byways programme to be dropped by DEFRA

A multi-million pound project to unearth and re-instate out of use byways and droving roads, led by Natural England, is to be abandoned after it was exposed by Farmers Weekly magazine.

The Discovering Lost Ways project, a [pounds sterling]15m programme to restore thousands of out-of-use and long-forgotten byways across farmland, sites of special scientific interest and private residences, was uncovered by Farmers Weekly in October 2007.

Countryside campaigners such as the Country Land and Business Association welcomed the news:
