Ovation is not enough to avert BPO's demise. (pay reductions for Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra members)

I'm ashamed of myself for standing and cheering for people who just accepted another pay cut. I'll never do it again.

That was the scene at Kleinhans Music Hall when the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra opened its new season. There was a prolonged and emotional ovation from the audience, which stood applauding the beleaguered musicians who have been abused by the orchestra's board of directors and management.

The ovation was a show of support from a loyal audience, but it was a pitiful effort. How did the musicians feel, looking up at all those suits and ties, all those new fall frocks, all applauding because they can't think of anything better to do?
