Nearly all the dryers we tested scored at least very good for drying performance. Those that scored excellent were better at drying delicate clothes at low temperatures and leaving loads damp enough for ironing.

While our test scores are for electric dryers, we've found that gas and electric dryers perform similarly. Gas dryers cost more but are less expensive to operate, so you'll recoup the added expense quickly. Electric dryers require a heavy-duty, 240-volt line.

Two more tips: Manufacturer pairings of washers and dryers are more than hype. You might see slightly better dryer performance than in our Ratings if you use the washing machine mate. Also, the performance of an older dryer might improve with a new washer that extracts more water than its predecessor.

Guide to the Ratings

Overall score is based primarily on drying performance, drum volume and noise. Drying performance combines performance on four types of laundry loads of different sizes and fabric mixes: A 12-lb. load, predominantly cotton, representing a family's large weekly load; an 8-lb. load of all-cotton items; an 8-lb. load of cotton/polyester blend clothing; and a 3-lb. load of synthetic delicates, women's pajamas, nightgowns, bras and underwear. Drum capacity varied from about 5 to 7.5 cu. ft. The noise score was determined by a panel of judges who listened while machines dried an 8-pound load, measuring both sound quality and volume. A stainless-steel drum is likely to resist damage better than plastic and painted metal drums. A porcelain top resists scratching better than a painted one but generally adds to a dryer's cost. Painted tops, far more common, are often quite durable with normal use. A removable drying rack attaches inside the drum to keep items such as sneakers or sweaters from tumbling. Custom programs allow you to save your favorite settings. Price is approximate retail.
