These models are very good or excellent overall performers. They clean well, aren't excessively noisy, and are easy to load. Like most of the tested models, they have a heavy- duty (or pots-and-pans) cycle. Adjustable racks and other features that are designed to provide easier, more-flexible loading will add to the price of many dishwashers, but several high-scoring models in this report are equipped with those conveniences and cost less than $600.
Another way to keep the cost down is to buy a machine without a stainless- steel tub. Other features, such as hidden controls, might lend a sleek appearance, but you'll pay more for them.
Guide to the Ratings
Overall score is based mainly on washing, but also factors in noise, energy and water use, loading, and more. Washing was tested using our standard, very dirty, full load. Because we switched to an enzyme-based detergent for our tests, Ratings for models that appear here and in archived reports may differ. Energy use is for a normal cycle. The most energy is needed for heating water, both at the water heater and in the machine. Noise was judged during fill, wash, and drain, mainly by a listening panel. Loading flexibility reflects the ability to hold extra place settings and oversize items such as platters up to 13-1/2 in. long and Pilsner-type glasses up to 10 in. high. Ease of use considers convenience of controls and other factors. Cycle time is based on a normal cycle including heated dry, if that feature is available. A sensor adjusts water usage and cycle time to the amount of soil on the dishes. This should make a dishwasher use water more efficiently, but we found that wasn't always the case. A self-cleaning filter is convenient, but it can contribute to noise. Hidden controls along the top edge of the door contribute to a sleeker look. An adjustable upper rack allows more flexibility in loading items such as tall glasses. Some models hide all controls; others hide only some. Price is approximate retail.
