OFFENSIVE baskeball players are not born overnight. They may have a tremendous amount of raw talent and instinct, but unfortunately we cannot teach every kid to "Be Like Mike." We can, however, instill confidence and create a team that is truly tough with the ball.

The first thing to emphasize is that good offenses do not turn the ball over. The foundation for such an offense lies in the following fundamentals An offensive player should:

1. Clearly establish a pivot foot when catching the ball on the perimeter.

2. Square-up to the basket immediately upon catching the ball, making an aggressive shot fake and jab step. Keep pressure on the defender so that he will have to react to you rather than dictate what he wants you to do.

3. Make strong moves to the basket against physical defenders.

4. Break through double teams without losing the ball or charging.

5. Hang tough against a defender who claws at you and the ball.
