Two software vendors are seeking to infuse the often emotional decision-making process with a dose of cool computerized reasoning.

Both Avantos Performance Systems and Arlington Software Corp. are this month releasing applications designed to automate decision making by providing a rules-based framework for organizing and weighing options for any decision, from the purchase of new IT equipment to hiring new employees.

Software analysts said this category of software may meet some resistance because its usefulness is not evident. But some feel the software can be useful.
