There's always a weird story or two about football recruiting, but the one coming out of Nevada about the prospect who picked California over Oregon might top any in recent years.
Kevin Hart of Fernley High School, a small school in northern Nevada, held a news conference in front of the student body on Friday to announce he had made his college decision. Not only did a newspaper reporter make the 25-mile drive from Reno to Fernley for the announcement, but two Reno television stations were there, too.
Only one problem: it later came out that Cal had never made the young man an offer of a scholarship, and Rivals.com reported the Bears didn't even recruit Hart. There seems to be some question if anybody did, beyond the usual mass mailings sent to high school seniors.
This, despite the recruit telling reporters that Cal coach Jeff Tedford "and I talked a lot, and the fact that the head coach did most of the recruiting of me kind of gave me the real personal experience."
Tedford didn't respond to queries for comment.
