Byline: LARRY EDSALL
The doctor asked Bob Bondurant if he wanted the good news or the bad news. Bondurant asked for the good: Three broken ribs would heal, so would both of his broken legs, and his concussion was mild.
And the bad news? Bondurant had a chip in a bone at the base of his spine. If he sat up, he'd risk paralysis. Oh, the doctor added, there was something else. Did Bondurant see that his feet were in casts? All those bones were broken, and he'd never walk again.
"Never?'' Bondurant asked. "Never,'' the doctor replied.
Bondurant refused to accept the prognosis.
"In life, if you have a strong will and determination to do something, you can overcome almost anything,'' he says from nearly 75 years of experience. "Too many people just stop.''
Bondurant refused to stop. He went through five more doctors until he found a holistic chiropractor who said, "Let's see what we can do.'' The pain was awful, but Bondurant's back healed, and he got back on his feet. He was determined to get back into a race car as well, but he knew that would take time. In the meantime, he needed to make a living, so he started teaching others to race.
