HACKNEY COUNCIL HAS DELAYED A PLANNING decision originally scheduled for early this week on Bishops Place, its joint venture with Hammerson. The 1m sq ft project is the first phase of a 10-year 4.5m sq ft masterplan for the area to the north of Liverpool Street. The Greater London Authority is to have the final say over the development.
But there is a problem: Hammerson's plans involve the demolition of the former Norton Folgate power station, which was built in 1893 and is now better known to locals as the Light, a trendy bar and restaurant. Hackney Council is to decide next month whether the Light is to be included in the Shoreditch High Street conservation area.
