IRS touts e-file, direct deposit.(TAX RETURNS)

The IRS is encouraging taxpayers to file their 2007 federal income tax returns electronically and--if they are due a refund--to have the refund direct deposited into one or more accounts.

E-Filing Gaining Momentum

A total of about 138 million individual tax returns are expected to be filed this year, and the IRS says that last year's record of nearly 80 million e-filed returns will likely be broken.

Taxpayers can file their returns electronically through a tax preparer, over-the-counter software or IRS Free File. Free File, accessible through IRS.gov, is available to taxpayers who earned $54,000 or less.
