Visiting the venerable Studebaker collection in its current home in South Bend, Indiana-several blocks east of its old location-is a real treat. Both cool and inviting, on a tree-lined street in a historic residential area near Tippecanoe (one of the Studebaker family's old mansions), the site is within walking distance of downtown hotels.
The collection includes more than 50 vehicles, ranging from 19th-century wagons to 1966 automobile prototypes. The 1956 Packard Predictor dream car is included as a dramatic reminder of Studebaker's failed partnership with Packard. A pleasant cafe and patio offer refreshments between history lessons.
The exhibit area starts with seven-foot-high illuminated red letters spelling "LARK,'' mounted by the grand staircase. The South Bend dealership had them made in 1958 to help announce the new Lark car.
Most of the vehicles sparkle-many could pass for new. A 1924 Light Six with an innovative hardtop coupe body built in China in the shops of the Shanghai Horse Bazaar & Motor Co. is a rare gem. Raymond Loewy's personal 1972 Avanti II coupe (Avanti was resurrected as an independent car company after Studebaker failed) has a diagonal white stripe painted on the door.
