The Chemistry Council of New Jersey (CCNJ; Trenton) and dry cleaner representatives were scheduled to testify last week against a New Jersey proposal that would phase out the use of perchloro-ethylene (perc) by 2021 (CW, Dec. 19, 2007, p. 27). Chemical and dry cleaning industry representatives say the rule, proposed last December by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP; Trenton), is based on "outdated studies and data which do not reflect recent improvements and changes in the industry." The phaseout would make the industry less profitable and would provide few health benefits, executives say.
