It's not at all clear that the economy is entering a recession. What we have here isn't trouble in the housing market that is spreading to other sectors of the economy so much as panic in stock markets and the press that is spreading to politicians. Everyone in Washington wants to appear to be "doing something" about the economy, so some sort of "stimulus" bill will probably pass.
