As much as we liked the standard Saturn Vue ("Seeing Is Believing,'' AW, May 28, 2007), the 2008 Vue Red Line is even better. Squatting on its 18-inch wheels and lowered suspension and with a huge front air intake, the vehicle looks the "sport'' part. At the same time, Saturn hasn't skimped on utility, providing a roomy, comfortable and well crafted interior.
This is the Vue that Saturn should have built years ago, instead of playing so far outside the box with the first-gen model it introduced back in 2001. This compact sport/utility vehicle is now every bit as good as the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V. And in Red Line guise, the Saturn provides a performance edge the competition can't match.
There is an overall solidity to the Vue, with the German Opel connection influencing the entire Saturn lineup. It drives German, with good steering, well-damped suspension (but not overly so) and a quiet, compliant ride. Nice.
The powertrain is identical to that found in the range-topping Vue XR-a 3.6-liter dohc V6, producing 257 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque, matched to a six-speed automatic transmission.
