T-shirts, caps and jerseys are big business for the National Football League - a $3 billion business.
More than $3.1 billion in retail sales of NFL merchandise was generated nationwide last year. About $50 million of that was for paraphernalia to promote and celebrate Super Bowl XXIX in Miami.
If the trend continues, that amount will increase as Super Bowl XXX nears, according to Brian McCarthy, corporate communications manager for the NFL.
These figures "reflect the passion fans have for the game itself," McCarthy said.
