The World Rally Championship doesn't receive the U.S. television coverage it deserves, but that doesn't mean you have to miss out on one of the world's most spectacular forms of motorsport. Most WRC venues are destinations in themselves, and rallies are far easier to negotiate than most people think. Here are three of the best destinations for U.S. fans in 2008.
Rally Mexico Feb. 28-March 2; based in Lecentsn, Mexico; www.rallymexico.com
How to get there: A number of airlines fly direct to the airport in Lecentsn, Guanajuato. Alternatively, you can fly to Lecentsn from Mexico City or even drive. It should take about three and a half hours (if you have a decent navigator to cut through the Mexico City traffic). Car rental is available through major rental companies, but make sure you have a confirmed reservation and collect it on time, as rental cars are scarce during rally week.
Where to stay: Lecentsn has plenty of decent hotels. There are two Holiday Inns (the Holiday Inn Poliforum is within walking distance of the WRC service park), the Fiesta Americana is positively luxurious, and the Real de Minas strikes the right balance among price, convenience and quality. Be sure to book as soon as you can; it's tricky (but not quite impossible) to get a room in the run-up to the event.
Where to get tickets and more: Tickets are available from the official website. They offer great value for money, as the stages are easily accessible and rarely crowded. All necessary maps and information are in the spectator guide, available from news kiosks throughout Lecentsn during rally week, as well as from the rally office at the Poliforum. Make sure you see the start on Thursday night at Guanajuato-a UNESCO World Heritage Site-and visit the end of the Ibarilla stage, a flat-out section that caught out Marcus Gronholm two years ago.
What to do: Lecentsn is the leather capital of Mexico, so there is good opportunity for bargain shopping. The bars and the night life are lively, with dangerously cheap margaritas and fajitas. Make sure to visit a tequila factory (there are several nearby), and take a look at vibrant Mexico City-or Cancun or Acapulco-if you have time.
