The organizer of the Dakar Rally canceled this year's event because of a terrorist threat in Mauritania. The rally was to start in Lisbon on Jan. 5 and end in Dakar-the capital of Senegal-on Jan. 20, covering Morocco and Mauritania en route.
Terrorists killed four French tourists in Mauritania on Dec. 24, 2007, and there has been an increasing atmosphere of unrest in the country. Specific threats were also made against the rally.
Eight of the rally's 15 stages were due to run through Mauritania, with more than 500 competitors in cars, bikes and trucks.
"I'm very disappointed, and so is the team, but we have to respect the decision if it's not safe,'' said Carlos Sainz, the two-time World Rally champion who was due to start his second Dakar Rally in Volkswagen's Race Touareg.
VW-which supported the decision to cancel-won't say how much it spent preparing its Touareg program, but educated guesses are that it was somewhere between $30 million and $40 million. VW still can campaign the Touareg on the FIA Cross Country World Cup, but this has a much lower profile than the Dakar.
The organizer claims that Dakar's future is safe; however, speculation is that the rally could move out of Africa next year.
