Packaging consolidation rife as US giant sells site and rebrands.(Chesapeake Corp.)(Brief article)

Packaging's biggest names have gone through another week of consolidation after Chesapeake rebranded and sold a plant to Mayr-Melnhof and Macfarlane Group bought a distribution specialist.

Both Chesapeake and Macfarlane have said they are looking for further deals, suggesting that 2008 will bring another raft of M&A activity after a busy period of consolidation in 2007 (see box).

US-owned packaging giant Chesapeake has sold a cigarette packaging facility near Bremen, Germany to Mayr-Melnhof, citing falling demand and plans to restructure part of its manufacturing base in Eastern Europe Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
