The next outing for this column will be in 2008, so let me wrap up some odds and ends from '07.
* This was the 50th-anniversary year of the '57 Chevy. It's essentially the same car as the '55, which was more significant with the arrival of the small-block V8. Designers expected the car we now call the '58 to be ready a year earlier, so the big-fin third-year version was a late rush job. Still, the '57 is the one collectors hanker after, so much so that you now can build one from scratch with all-new parts, just as you can do with that Ford anniversary car of '07, the '32.
On the Great American Race, I rode along with Gary and Jean-Ann Martin of Louisville, Kentucky, in their red '57 Chevy. It's cool, if short of legroom in back with a tall guy like Gary up front. It also has a digital instrument panel. Go figure.
* We prefer driving, but I did a lot of riding this year. One time that will stick in my memory was a day riding to England's Brooklands track (celebrating its 100th anniversary and with an outstanding museum) and then to the Bentley factory ...
