If there's one automotive trick you'd think every driver would recognize, it's the old penny-in-the-tread tip.
You've heard it many times: To determine if your tires are worn out, insert a penny into the tread. If Lincoln's head is exposed . . . Some experts recommend a quarter instead of a penny for today's wide tires, but the image is ubiquitous.
So, how come I got all those blank looks in the editorial meeting?
In my day job, I write for a newspaper. Recently, I did a short guide to getting your ride ready for winter.
There isn't much to it these days, what with all-season this and multiviscosity that, but my premise was that checking things over couldn't hurt. To make my list of tips fit the space allocated to it, I had to add one. I picked the penny trick, which I'd omitted because I figured it was common knowledge.
Apparently not.
