Most gasoline-electric hybrids achieve a large portion of their fuel-economy gains by shutting down the gas engine in stop/start city driving. Some need to restart the gas engine to provide drive power, while others get by on electric-motor locomotion alone.
Either way, the systems typically rely on a fast-reacting electric motor to bring the car back to life from a stop. Mazda, however, is developing what it calls the Smart Idle Stop System (SISS), which employs no electric motors for restart.
