The Legacy of Goh Choo San: In Memory and Tribute Singapore Dance Theatre Esplanade Theatre, Singapore September 7-8, 2007 Reviewed by Malcolm Tay
Choo San Goh thought that a dance should change your mood and lead you into another world, and the Singapore-born choreographer's most distinctive works do just that. To mark the 20th anniversary of his death, Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT), co-founded by his sister Soo-Khim Goh in 1988, honored his memory with a gala that revealed a growing talent cut short by illness, celebrated his legacy, and looked ahead to the future.
Janek Schergen, sole custodian of his ballets, staged excerpts from eight pieces Goh had made between 1978 and 1986, six of them for The Washington Ballet, where he was resident choreographer for 11 years. While some of Carol Kingston's set and costume designs have not aged well (especially those for In the Glow of the Night), the stylistic range of the ballets shows a lively mind exploring neoclassical dance in various modes: the sleek lyricism of Fives and Momentum, the rose-hued romanticism of Schubert Symphony, the lurid exoticism of Birds of Paradise and Unknown Territory.
