The American president has many perks, including the handing out of Medals of Freedom--for an article on that subject, see page 24 ("A Tasty Presidential Perk," by Jay Nordlinger). A president also hands out Humanities Medals. And, like the Medals of Freedom, these reflect his values, beliefs, and tastes. President Clinton gave Humanities Medals to the Democratic-party intelligentsia: Arthur Schlesinger, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Taylor Branch, Garrison Keillor, Studs Terkel, Bill Moyers ...
