The book of Jonah, in spite of its brevity, has long captured the imaginations of not only biblical commentators and readers but also artists and poets. This ongoing fascination is clearly due to both the subject and the manner in which it is narrated. The present commentary provides a helpful guide to the literary skills employed in the composition of the book. In this regard Limburg's treatment of the text is very welcome.

His discussion of introductory matters is, however, surprisingly brief, and herein is the main weakness of his work. His views regarding authorship, date, genre, and unity of composition are unlikely to surprise many. Composed in the late exilic or …
