CLEVELAND -- Renal tumors between 3 and 5 cm can be ablated with complete necrosis at a single session using real-time thermometry, according to the results of a University of Miami study.

Retreatment rates for radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of 3- to 5-cm renal tumors have exceeded 40%, which is unacceptable, Dr. Robert I. Carey said at the international meeting of the Endourological Society.

Dr. Carey, who is in private practice in Sarasota, Fla., reported his experience with 106 patients who underwent laparoscopic or percutaneous CT-guided RFA. Of those, 42 patients had tumors in the 3-to 5-cm range at the time of ablation. Nonconducting temperature probes,…
